1The Mol

It is said that the mole’s eyes are blind. But he says to his mother that he can see. His mother wants to test him. The mother brings a little food to put in front of him and asks him what it is. He says it is a little stone. His mother says: “Ah poor child you not only can’t see anything but also your nose is useless.”

This is to say those people who like boasting often claim that they can do great thing but they expose themselves from some trifle.

2The Passerby and the Phoenix Tree

At noon in summer it is extremely hot. Some passersby are very tired. Having seen a phoenix tree they go under the tree for a rest.

Looking up at the tree they remark to the tree: ‘‘Hey! This tree has not fruit it is no use. ” The tree answers that: ” You don’t know what’ good. You are getting my favor but you say that I am useless without fruit.”

This is to say: Although some people don’t know what good they are getting from others they still criticize their benefactors.

3The moon on the Tree

In ancient times no moon was in sky. The sky was black.

Once upon a time four men went in a carriage to a trip. They reached another country when it was dark; they saw a tall tree with a ball of soft silver light hanging from it. They asked a native passing if it was a light in a tree. The native told them that it was a moon which their chief had bought with three coins.

At midnight the four man stole the moon and put it in their carriage covering it with a piece of clothing. They carried the moon to their country and hung it on a tall oak. Since then the night were bright and moonlit so all the people were happy.

Many years later one of the men was ill and dying he said that a quarter of the moon belonged to him. And he wanted to take it into the tomb. When he died they cut a quarter of the moon to put in the coffin. The other three men also wanted to be buried with their share of the moon when they died. So it was done as they wished. When the last one died the sky was dark.

In the heaven the four men rose from their graves and put the moon back together. The people in heaven sang danced drank and enjoyed themselves. Their noise spread in throughout heaven. The guard St. Peter thought the people had rebelled he took his horse and rode quickly to the place. When he got there he ordered the dead to lie in their tombs. He took away the moon to hang back in the sky. From this time on the moon belonged to the people on earth.

One day there was a blind man sitting on the steps of a building with a sign by his feet that reads: "I am blind please help."

A creative publicist was walking by the blind man and stopped to observe that the man only had a few coins in his hat. He put a few of his own coins in the hat and without stopping to ask for permission(征求许可) took the sign turned it around and wrote a new message. He then placed the sign by the feet of the blind man and left.

Later that afternoon the creative publicist returned by the blind man and noticed that his hat was almost completely full of bills and coins. The blind man recognized his footsteps and asked if it was him who had changed his sign? He also wanted to know what the man wrote on it.

The blind man didn't know that his new sign reads as this: "It's spring now but I can't see it."

5The Real Princess

There was once a Prince who wished to marry a Princess;but then she must be a real Princess.

He travelled all over the world in hopes of finding such a lady;but there was always something wrong.

Princesses he found in plenty; but whether they were real Princesses it was impossible for him to decide for now one thing now another seemed to him not quite right about the ladies.

At last he returned to his palace quite cast down, because he wished so much to have a real Princess for his wife.

One evening a fearful tempest arose it thundered and lightened and the rain poured down from the sky in torrents: besides it was as dark as pitch.

All at once there was heard a violent knocking at the door and the old King,he Prince’s father went out himself to open it.

It was a Princess who was standing outside the door. What with the rain and the wind, she was in a sad condition: the water trickled down from her hair and her clothes clung to her body. She said she was a real Princess.

“Ah! we shall soon see that!” thought the old Queen-mother; however she said not a word of what she was going to do; but went quietly into the bedroom took all the bed-clothes off the bed and put three little peas on the bedstead.

She then laid twenty mattresses one upon another over the three peas and put twenty feather beds over the mattresses. Upon this bed the Princess was to pass the night.

The next morning she was asked how she had slept. “Oh very badly indeed!” she replied. “I have scarcely closed my eyes the whole night through. I do not know what was in my bed but I had something hard under me and am all over black and blue. It has hurt me so much!”

Now it was plain that the lady must be a real Princess since she had been able to feel the three little peas through the twenty mattresses and twenty feather beds. None but a real Princess could have had such a delicate sense of feeling.

The Prince accordingly made her his wife;being now convinced that he had found a real Princess. The three peas were however put into the cabinet of curiosities where they are still to be seen provided they are not lost.
