1情人节 Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is on the February 14 each year. It is celebrated in many countries around the world although it remains a working day in most of them. After New Year's Day it is the most celebrated holiday around the world. It’s a holiday for lovers or couples. This is a festival of love and romance as well as flowers chocolates greeting cards. On that day there are many activities for couples to celebrate showing their love to mate. Gift exchanging is the most common. In recent years February 14 become much more popular than before although there is another Valentine’s Day in China. Besides there are many people choose that day to propose marriage or get married. In short it’s a day of love.

情人节在每年的2月14日，世界上的许多国家都庆祝这个节日，虽然那一天在许多国家都是工作日。新年过后，这是全世界范围内最隆重的专属于情人们的日子。这是一个关于爱、浪漫以及花、巧克力、贺卡的节日。在情人节当天，情侣们会有许多庆祝活动，向另一半表达爱意。交换礼物是最为常见的。近些年，虽然我国已经有了七夕情人节，但是2月14情人节依然比以前盛行。此外，也有很多人选择在这一天、求婚或结婚。简单来说，这是一个爱的节日。

2西方情人节来历The History of Western Valentine's Day

There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine's Day. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14 269 A.D. the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries.

关于情人节的起源有许多种说法。有关人士认为情人节是一个名叫桑特-瓦伦丁的人士发起的。他是罗马人，因为拒绝放弃基督教而于公元前269年2月14日惨遭杀害，这一天也正好是全城盛行彩票抽奖的日子。

Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter who had become his friend and signed it "From Your Valentine".

而另外一种说法更具有传奇色彩，相传桑特-瓦伦丁曾留下一本日记给了狱卒的女儿，署名为“你的情人”，据说这名狱卒的女儿就是桑特-瓦伦丁的情人。

Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour St. Valentine.

还有其它的说法也颇为有趣。比如说有人认为在克劳迪亚斯君王统治时期，桑特-瓦仑丁曾经是一名神父，因为公然挑战克劳迪亚斯君王的权威身陷囹圄。所以公元前496年罗马教皇格莱西亚斯特意将2月14日作为一个特别的日子以纪念桑特-瓦伦丁。

Gradually February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. The date was marked by sending poems and simple gifts such as flowers. There was often a social gathering or a ball.

此后2月14日就成为了一个具有特殊意义的日子。在这天人们向自己心仪的人传递信息以示爱意。而理所当然的桑特 瓦仑丁也就成为了为恋爱中的男女们牵线搭桥的人。在2月14日这天人们会特意做诗或者用一些小礼物送给自己心爱的人。而且人们还会组织各种各样的聚会来庆祝这个特殊的节日。

In the United States Miss Esther Howland is given credit for sending the first valentine cards. Commercial valentines were introduced in the 1800's and now the date is very commercialised.

The town of Loveland Colorado does a large post office business around February 14. The spirit of good continues as valentines are sent out with sentimental verses and children exchange valentine cards at school.

Today is March 14ththat isWhite Valentine's Day. White is regarded as naive pure spiritual in European countries just like Westerners will wear white wedding dress when they get married. Gradually "white" represents hope and happiness which is blessing to lovers.This has become one of the most important source for the coming White Valentine's Day. White Valentine's Day is popular in Japan Taiwan and other regions. what we know about it is a continuation of the Western Valentine's day. There are big differences in giving gifts between those two Valentines' day: in Chinese mainland England America and Canada the boy will send a gift to the girl on February 14th Valentine's day. Most of the gifts are rose or chocolate. In Japan and Taiwan the situation is opposite. In Japan usually the female would like to express her love to her lover would send gifts to the male on t Valentine's Day (February 14th). And the male will return gifts and tells the girl his love on March 14th. Of course he will only send gifts to the one he would like to. In some places of Asia the young people will celebrate this festival too.

4情人节的惊喜 The Surprise on Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is coming soon it is on February14. The day is a big day for the couple they need to spend the special day with romance the boys are always buying gifts to their girls the most common thing is to buy flowers and have dinner maybe they could do something more interesting. The boys can surprise their girlfriends they can take the girls to the place where they get to know each other wondering around for a while and remembering those beautiful days just like they know for the first day how romantic! This will give the love relationship something new which can enhance their relationship. The girls can surprise their boys with some gifts they make by themselves. Girls are good at hand making so they can make out some gifts instead of buying because the boys will be moved by your heart. Valentine’s Day is romantic are you ready?

5西方情人节传统 Valentine's Day

St Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14 of each year the reason why it is celebrated on this day is because this was the day that the Patron Saint of Lovers "St Valentine" was supposedly executed on.

情人节是每年的2月14日，它在这一天庆祝的原因是因为这一天是恋人的保护神“圣瓦伦丁”定下来的。

On this day lovers all around the world mark this occasion as a day for sending poems cards flowers or candy etc. They might also be a social gathering or ball to mark the occasion.

这一天世界各地的情侣都以赠送诗歌、卡片、鲜花和糖果等等来庆祝。他们也可能以社交聚会或举行舞会来纪念这个日子。

Many Valentine's Day customs involved ways that single women could learn who their future husbands would be. Englishwomen of the 1700's wrote men's names on scraps of paper rolled each in a little piece of clay and dropped them all into water. The first paper that rose to the surface supposedly had the name of a woman's true love.

Also in the 1700's unmarried women pinned five bay leaves to their pillows on the eve of Valentine's Day. They pinned one leaf to the center of the pillow and one to each corner. If the charm worked they saw their future husbands in their dreams.

One of the oldest customs was the practice of writing women's names on slips of paper and drawing them from a jar. The woman whose name was drawn by a man became his valentine and he paid special attention to her. Many men gave gifts to their valentines. In some areas a young man gave his valentine a pair of gloves. Wealthy men gave fancy balls to honor their valentines.

Valentine cards became popular in Great Britain in the nineteenth century. Noted artist Kate Greenaway created cards which featured joyful children and beautiful gardens. Esther Howland was one of the first Valentine card manufacturers in the United States.

Inspired by a British card she began production in 1847. Her cards featured lace and paper flowers and leaves. Other card manufacturers emphasized Cupid the pudgy winged son of Venus the goddess of love. In Roman lore Cupid is known as Eros the son of Aphrodite.

In Europe people celebrate Valentine's Day in many ways. British children sing special Valentine's Day songs and receive gifts of candy fruit or money. In some areas of England people bake valentine buns with caraway seeds plums or raisins. People in Italy hold a Valentine's Day feast.

在欧洲，人们有多种庆祝情人节的方式。英国的孩子们会唱特别的情人节歌曲和接受糖果、水果、金钱礼物。在英格兰的某些地方，人们烤情人节小面包准备李子、或葡萄干。意大利人会举行的情人节大餐。
